Japan gets all the credit for cherry blossom season — but here's a little secret: you don't need a passport or a 14-hour flight to experience that magical pink bloom. The United States has some absolutely stunning cherry blossom destinations hiding in plain sight, from the beaches of Southern California to the streets of Georgia.
Here are a few spots across the US that are giving Japan a serious run for its money this spring:
WEST COAST
1. Japanese Tea Garden — San Francisco, CA Tucked inside Golden Gate Park, the Japanese Tea Garden is one of the oldest public Japanese gardens in the United States — and every spring, it transforms into a dreamy pink paradise. Cherry blossom trees cascade beautifully over the iconic bridges and jewel-box tea house, creating some of the most photogenic scenes in all of San Francisco. The garden hosts its annual Sakura Matsuri celebration inspired by traditional Japanese cherry blossom festivals.
Best time to visit: Mid-March to early April 💰 Entry: Adults $13, Children $8 📍 Pro tip: Go early on a weekday morning to avoid crowds — the soft morning light makes for incredible photos!
2. Huntington Botanical Gardens — San Marino, CA
Just outside of Pasadena, the Huntington Botanical Gardens is a world-class destination that most people outside of Southern California have never heard of. Their Japanese Garden features stunning cherry blossoms framed by koi ponds, traditional bridges, and serene landscape design that feels transported straight from Kyoto.
🗓️ Best time to visit: Late February to mid-March (Southern CA blooms earlier!) 💰 Entry: Adults $29, Children $13 📍 Pro tip: Book tickets in advance online — this spot sells out on peak weekends!
3. Japanese Friendship Garden — San Diego, CA
San Diego's hidden gem for cherry blossom season. The Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park features beautiful Yoshino cherry trees — the same variety as Washington D.C.'s famous Tidal Basin — in a peaceful, authentic Japanese garden setting. At just 12 acres it feels intimate and unhurried, a world away from the busy city outside.
🗓️ Best time to visit: Early to mid-March 💰 Entry: Adults $12, Children $6 📍 Pro tip: Combine it with a full day at Balboa Park — there's so much to explore!
EAST COAST
4. Tidal Basin — Washington D.C.
The most iconic cherry blossom destination in all of the United States — and honestly, one of the most beautiful in the world. The Tidal Basin's 3,800 Yoshino cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912 as a symbol of friendship between the two nations, and they frame some of America's most cherished landmarks including the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument in a breathtaking canopy of pink and white.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs March 20 through April 12, 2026 — with Bloomfest performances, the beloved Blossom Kite Festival, guided bike tours, and boat tours all happening throughout the season. This year, peak bloom was announced on March 26 — a few days earlier than expected!
🗓️ Best time to visit: Late March to early April (peak bloom March 29–April 1, 2026) 💰 Entry: FREE 🙌 📍 Pro tip: Skip the crowded sunrise rush and go around 10am or 2pm on a weekday instead — you'll have a much better experience!
MIDWEST
5. Jackson Park — Chicago, IL
Chicago's secret cherry blossom spot. Jackson Park on the South Side comes alive every spring with beautiful cherry blossom trees that bloom against the backdrop of the city's skyline and the iconic Museum of Science and Industry. It's far less crowded than other big-city blossom destinations, making it a favorite for locals in the know.
🗓️ Best time to visit: Mid to late April (Chicago blooms later due to the cooler climate) 💰 Entry: FREE 🙌 📍 Pro tip: The Japanese Garden section within Jackson Park makes for the most stunning photos!
THE SOUTH
6. Macon, Georgia
This one might be the biggest surprise on the list — and the most spectacular. Macon, Georgia is home to over 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees, making it one of the largest cherry blossom displays in the entire world — yes, the entire world! The city hosts the International Cherry Blossom Festival every March, affectionately known as the "Pinkest Party on Earth." 🎉
The 2026 festival ran March 20–29 with concerts, parades, a 5K race, fireworks, and entire neighborhoods turned into jaw-dropping tunnels of pink blossoms. It's one of the most underrated spring festivals in the country.
🗓️ Best time to visit: Mid to late March 💰 Entry: Most festival events and the parade are FREE 🙌 📍 Pro tip:Drive the Cherry Blossom Trail for the most stunning blossom tunnel views — your camera roll will never be the same!
BONUS SPOT
7. Branch Brook Park — Newark, NJ
Did you know that Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey has MORE cherry blossom trees than Washington D.C.? With over 5,000 cherry trees, it holds the title of the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States— and yet almost nobody outside of New Jersey knows about it. The Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the bloom each spring with outdoor events, races, and family activities set against a backdrop of rolling hills and scenic lakes.
🗓️ Best time to visit: Early to mid-April 💰 Entry: FREE 🙌 📍 Pro tip: Only 20 minutes from Manhattan — easy day trip from NYC!
💡 Tips for the Best Cherry Blossom Experience
Timing is everything — peak bloom typically lasts only 1–2 weeks, and wind, rain, or heat can shorten it overnight. Follow local park services on social media for real-time updates.
Go on weekdays — weekend crowds at popular spots like the Tidal Basin can be overwhelming. A weekday visit is a completely different (and much more peaceful) experience.
Golden hour is your best friend — the soft light of early morning or late afternoon makes cherry blossoms absolutely glow in photos.
Dress the part — soft pinks, whites, and pastels photograph beautifully against the blooms for content creators!
Check the BloomCam — several locations including Macon and Washington D.C. offer live streaming bloom cameras so you can check conditions before making the trip.
