Coming off a deeply healing and relaxing stay in the Maldives, the reality of the massive long-haul journey back to Los Angeles was a little daunting. But instead of dreading the transit time, we decided to lean in. When you are looking at a 24 to 33-hour layover, you have two choices: sit in the terminal, or step outside and turn it into a bonus meaningful adventure.

We chose the latter.

Singapore is arguably the most perfect city in the world for a quick stopover. It is incredibly efficient, staggeringly beautiful, and offers a striking, modern contrast to the serene beaches of the Maldives. Here is how to make the most of a quick, one-day reboot in the Lion City before catching that final flight back to LA.

1. Drop the Bags and Breathe

The beauty of transiting through Changi Airport is the seamless logistics. Take advantage of the airport's baggage storage facilities. Dropping your heavy carry-ons and personal items instantly changes the vibe from "exhausted traveler" to "ready to explore."

2. Step Into a Cinematic Universe at Jewel Changi

You do not even have to leave the airport footprint for your first breathtaking moment. The HSBC Rain Vortex inside Jewel is an absolute must-see. Standing in front of the world's tallest indoor waterfall, surrounded by a lush terraced forest, feels like stepping onto a movie set. It is the perfect spot to stretch your legs and grab some stunning photos before heading into the city.

3. Wander Through Gardens by the Bay

To keep the relaxing momentum going, head straight to Gardens by the Bay. The Supertree Grove is iconic, but taking the time to wander through the Cloud Forest dome is where the real magic happens. It is climate-controlled (a welcome relief from the humidity) and incredibly peaceful. Catching the evening light show here is a memory the whole family will carry long after returning home.

4. Taste the Culture at a Hawker Centre

You cannot spend a day in Singapore without diving into the local food scene. Skip the formal sit-down restaurants and head to Lau Pa Sat or Maxwell Food Centre. It is fast, affordable, and allows everyone to grab exactly what they are craving—from Hainanese chicken rice to fresh satay skewers—before resting up for the flight.

The Takeaway

A 30-plus-hour transit sounds exhausting on paper, but changing your perspective turns a layover into a highlight. By the time we boarded our flight back to Los Angeles, we were tired, but our cups were completely full.
